Audit Officer

Summary

The Internal Control/Audit Officer is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness and adequacy of internal control systems, processes, and procedures across the organization. The role involves conducting audits, identifying control deficiencies, and recommending improvements that enhance operational efficiency, ensure regulatory compliance, and safeguard organizational assets. The officer plays a critical role in strengthening internal governance and risk mitigation, particularly within high-risk areas such as financial reporting, investment operations, and compliance-sensitive functions.

Responsibilities

Internal Control Review and Assessment

  • Conduct periodic assessments of internal control processes across business units, with a focus on investment management, treasury operations, customer transactions, and financial reporting.
  • Evaluate existing policies, procedures, and control systems to determine adequacy, effectiveness, and alignment with regulatory standards.
  • Monitor adherence to internal policies and flag deviations to relevant stakeholders for prompt remediation.

 

Audit Planning and Execution

  • Assist in developing risk-based audit plans and participate in the end-to-end execution of audit engagements, including planning, fieldwork, reporting, and follow-up.
  • Perform walkthroughs and testing of controls to validate process integrity and risk mitigation effectiveness.
  • Draft audit findings and collaborate with auditees to ensure timely and actionable management responses.

 

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight

  • Support compliance monitoring efforts by reviewing control activities for alignment with applicable regulatory frameworks (e.g., CBN, SEC, IFRS, AML/CFT standards).
  • Assist in ensuring the timely implementation of recommendations arising from internal audits, external audits, and regulatory inspections.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry regulatory changes and assess their impact on internal controls.

 

Documentation and Reporting

  • Prepare comprehensive internal control and audit reports with clear recommendations for corrective action.
  • Maintain proper documentation of audit evidence, risk assessments, and testing procedures in accordance with internal audit methodology and quality standards.
  • Track control weaknesses and follow up on corrective actions to ensure full closure of identified gaps.

 

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with departments across the organization to foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous control improvement.
  • Provide guidance to business units on control best practices and participate in internal training and awareness sessions.
  • Other responsibilities as may be assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Relevant certifications such as ACA, ACCA, CIA, or CISA are highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 3–6 years of experience in internal control, internal audit, or risk assurance within the financial services sector.
  • In-depth understanding of internal control frameworks (e.g., COSO), auditing standards, and financial sector regulations.

Key Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, control design, and audit methodologies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with audit or ERP software (e.g., TeamMate, ACL, SAP) is an advantage.
  • Exceptional analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity, attention to detail, and discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for engaging stakeholders across all organizational levels.
